Hello and Welcome to PolymathGeek – a blog dedicated to develop the art of Knowing Something About Everything & Knowing Everything About Some Of The Things.
I started this blog to record my journey on the road to being a PolymathGeek.
So what, or rather who is a PolymathGeek?
A PolymathGeek combines the best of both a polymath and a geek. He has the wide field of view of a polymath and the laser sharp focus of a geek.
My idea for PolymathGeek came about when I was reading up about Leonardo Da Vinci. Not only was he a man of very wide range of interests, he also was an expert in quite a few of them. This was something of a revelation to me. Leonardo Da Vinci – painter, sculptor, architect, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist..phew… the list goes on.
What’s especially intriguing is that he violated quite a few narrow minded viewpoints that people harbour even today. For instance:
- A geek(scientist/professor/engineer/software programmer etc etc) can’t be an artist or appreciate some of the more delicate things in life.
- An artistically minded person can’t think rationally or have a scientific temper.
- Right brain is right and Left brain is left and never the twain shall meet!
But Leonardo proved that you can be a jack of all trades and a master of quite a few. Throughout history there have been many great people who have proved to be experts at multiple fields.
Talking about this niche – the art of cultivating the mindset of being a PolymathGeek – was seemingly not covered on the web or elsewhere, and I decided to start PolymathGeek to talk about all things PolymathGeeky – both the serious and the fun, but with the ultimate eye toward encouraging readers to become like the ideals of this philosophy Leonardo, Richard Feynman, Ibn Senna and many more.
I don’t claim to be a PolymathGeek. But I am on the journey to become one! I started this blog to share my adventures on this journey . To learn from other like minded people around the world and have loads of fun along the way!
So what are the fields that interest me? I am glad you asked. Well, here goes
Kites – both flying and building
Becoming an expert with a Slingshot: to take care of a particularly pesky neighborhood mutt with an overactive voice
Drawing a Manga series based on the Mahabharata
These are just a few of my (ever growing) interests. How good will I become at these? Only time will tell…I would like to conclude by quoting from the movie Shawshank Redemption , “I feel like a free man at a start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain.”
On that note, Welcome and happy reading!
